Prague Itinerary
(written after the fact)
Board bus in Kiev
Arrive in Prague. Finally!
Take taxi to hostel: shower.
Try to find a good place to
change money.
Eat Thanksgiving dinner of
Czech food with yummy Czech beer.
A small group of other
patrons play folk music in the café as we eat.
After dinner: Walk around
main square. We are not in Kiev anymore!
Breakfast at Bohemian Bagel.
Bagels! Cream cheese! Good coffee! Internet!
No, really, we’re not in
Kiev.
Walk to waterfront, Charles
Bridge.
Walk around Jewish quarter.
Lunch: Czech cafe. Garlic
soup with a Greek salad. Yum!
After lunch: try to go to
services at the Old New Synagogue. The women’s section is walled off from the
men’s in what is practically a separate room. There are peep-holes to look into
the sanctuary. I bolt.
Walk around Prague.
Dinner: Mama Lucy’s, a
Mexican restaurant. Veggie burrito and strawberry Margarita.
Back to hostel for early
night.
Breakfast at Bohemia Bagel.
Email Peace Corps to tell
them we are staying an extra day in Prague.
Visit “Museum of the Golden
Ring,” 20th-Century Czech art. Very interesting.
Walk around Prague.
Eat apple pie at Bohemia
Bagel.
Go to see movie in English.
We thought we were going to see the George Clooney/ Katherine Zeta Jones movie.
We actually saw, “Rules of Attraction.” Yeah. At least it was in English.
Dinner: Mama Lucy’s. Yes,
again.
Walk across Charles Bridge at
night.
Back to hostel for Z’s.
Yay! We’re not leaving today.
But before breakfast, we engage in marathon discussion regarding the two
options of taking the train that leaves tonight or the bus that leaves tomorrow
morning. We decide on the bus.
Breakfast at Bohemia Bagel.
Walk to the famous Prague
castle.
I return to the hostel for a
nap while the girls tour the inside of the castle and take a boat ride on the
Vltava River.
Meet up with the girls by the
clock in the town square.
Go to see a puppet show of
Don Giovanni (which Mozart premiered in Prague).
Dinner: Thai food! Yum!
Return to the hostel, alas,
for sleep, passing up the opportunity to explore the night-life in Prague. We
are all teetering on the verge of colds.
Breakfast at Bohemia Bagel.
Make our way to the bus
station.
Wait for the bus.
After two hours, call the bus
company.
Learn that the bus has been
cancelled.
Decide to take the train
leaving that night.
Learn of a bus to Lviv.
The girls opt for the bus,
while I stick with the train. We part ways, amicably.
Monday evening: Walk to town
square and see a youth troupe perform Czech folk dances.
Eat dinner at Mama Lucy’s.
Walk back to train station,
via river.
Board train.
Wednesday late morning: Arrive in Kiev.
