January 23, 2005: Inauguration Day in Kyiv

Who is that?

Oh, it's Secretary of State Colin Powell, on his last official state visit.

After the reception at the Ambassador's Residence, we had to head to McD's, because the Embassy had neglected to provide coffee, tea or even water at the 8:30 a.m. reception!

Then up to Independence Square to watch the Inauguration ceremonies projected on big-screen televisions.

Many Ukrainians took busses in to be in the capital today.

We make our way up the hill, following the crowd.

Security was on hand.

Gathering early.
